Republican Senator John Kennedy went full Joe McCarthy on Thursday. During a Senate Banking Committee hearing, Kennedy (R-LA) called Saule Omarova, Joe Biden’s appointee to run the Office of the Comptroller of Currency, “comrade” and basically accused her of Communist sympathies because she was born in Kazakhstan.

Sam: There are hearings in the senate or I should say yesterday the office of the controller of the currency controller. This is a big bank regulator position. and apparently, the banks are a little bit concerned about Biden's nominee Saule Omarova. And she was born in what was then the Soviet Union. And apparently, this has got people very scared here is Senator John well it's not the fact that she was born in the Soviet Union that's actually got them scared.
Matt: To say the type of person born from the Soviet Union that they're worried about.
Sam: I think they're more worried that she just seems to you know believe that there should be some tight regulations on banks period. I mean that's really what it is. I mean there's nothing particularly radical here about that. But they are attempting to paint her as a radical. And here is John Kennedy, Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana doing it in what I think you could probably call a ham-fisted way.
Kennedy: I don't mean any disrespect. I don't know whether to call you professor or comrade.
Audible: My goodness.
Saule Omarova: Senator…
Sam: Did you hear that? Did you hear it? did you hear like I don't know if it was a senator or whoever was just like oh my god? are you like that oh my goodness is the functional equivalent or you got to be [ __ ] kidding me. What I would like her to say is like wait do you consider me your comrade? Just yeah it started from the beginning I mean it really is so shocking that it's like this childish.
Kennedy: I don't mean any disrespect. I don't know whether to call you professor or comrade. Omarova: Senator, I'm not a communist. I do not subscribe to that ideology. I could not choose where I was born. I did not. I do not remember joining any Facebook group that subscribes to that ideology. I would never knowingly join any such group. There is no record of me ever actually participating in any Marxist or communist discussions of any kind. My family suffered under the communist regime. I grew up without knowing half of my family. My grandmother herself escaped death twice under the Stalin regime. this is what seared in my mind. That's who I am. I remember that history. I came to this country. I'm proud to be an American. and this is why I'm here today senator. I'm here today because I'm ready for public service.
Sam: I mean if anything is going to help her get past those people who don't want any type of regulations on banks to be executed that's actually going to help. I mean you know that is just so ridiculous. Now one can only imagine how many of those people are so concerned about the new cold war that we were having, I'm sure they are screaming from the rooftops now. about how repulsive what Senator Kennedy did. that is just impressive like I mean who is it like what four old people is that for.
Matt: Yeah I mean well it's like also I mean let's make a political liability to have a structural understanding of capitalism like it's the 1940s or 30s.
Sam: Again well I mean also she has an accent.
